Britain's Gambling Commission has voiced apprehensions over Meta's apparent disregard for promotions from unauthorized online betting platforms on its services. Speaking at a gathering in Barcelona, the commission's Executive Director, Tim Miller, took issue with Meta's approach to wagering ads appearing on sites like Facebook and Instagram.
In his presentation, as per the record, Miller noted: 'Outlets such as Meta assert they reject promotions from prohibited domains and erase them once informed. However, this stance implies they remain unaware without a tip-off, an assertion that's clearly inaccurate.'
Under Meta's guidelines, betting operations advertising in specific areas must possess valid permits there. Still, officials from the commission spotted non-compliant promoters via routine queries—ones absent from the GamStop registry, which enables users to restrict their own access to betting services online. Joining GamStop is a prerequisite for securing a license to operate in the UK.
Miller added: 'One would find it hard to believe that a tech behemoth like Meta lacks the ability to employ its keyword features to actively curb ads for unlicensed wagering. Such inaction could indicate a willingness to ignore the problem and keep collecting revenue from wrongdoers and deceivers until publicly confronted.'
