Last year, Traeger introduced the Woodridge line to provide a cost-effective choice for outdoor cooking enthusiasts, but the latest Westwood collection takes affordability further. This series delivers essential pellet grilling features through a basic control system and straightforward construction. It includes wireless internet access integrated with Traeger's mobile application, along with support for the brand's accessory rails. At price points of $700 and $800, however, these models come with several limitations when stacked against Traeger's higher-end products.

The Westwood grills feature a more basic control panel than their Woodridge counterparts. Instead of a dial, it uses buttons to raise or lower temperatures, accommodate both wired and wireless probes, manage Wi-Fi, and handle startup. The hopper, positioned on the side, holds up to 18 pounds of pellets, with storage shelves located on the left and below the grilling area. The interior configuration provides two levels, yielding 653 square inches or 823 square inches of cooking surface based on the selected variant.

Like other Traeger products, the Westwood operates as a hands-off cooking tool. Through its Wi-Fi link, users can monitor progress remotely using the Traeger app from any location. The device handles a variety of methods, from gentle smoking to baking and direct searing, within a temperature span of 180 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, a forward rail system supports Traeger's Pop and Lock add-ons, such as an expandable front table.

The reduced cost means some features are absent. Higher-tier Traeger grills often include Super Smoke and Keep Warm functions, which are not available here. Support is limited to a single wired probe, requiring careful meal planning. For an additional $80, compatibility extends to Traeger's wireless probe, offering a way to track more items. Furthermore, the hopper lacks a built-in sensor to monitor pellet levels, a useful tool for fuel management.

Although Traeger has emphasized mid-level and luxury pellet grills lately, the Westwood and Westwood XL now represent its entry-level choices. These models will succeed the well-received Pro line in the company's portfolio. This expansion into lower-priced segments occurs as Traeger navigates economic challenges and undergoes a corporate reorganization.

The Westwood and Westwood XL can now be purchased at select grill stores, such as Ace Hardware.
