The firm Mechanism, known for its 'gaming pillow' tailored to the Steam Deck and an expanding array of grips for portable gaming devices and desktops, has developed its initial add-on for the Steam Controller. This device from Valve hits shelves on May 4, coinciding with Mechanism's release of the Basegrip accessory, which enables users to secure the controller to a mobile phone or integrate it with various existing mounts from the company's lineup.

Designed with a snug fit over the controller's rear, the Basegrip accommodates the magnetic charging dock without interference. Given that many of Mechanism's products are modular, pairing the Basegrip allows attachment to numerous other items, such as a magnetic holder that positions a smartphone atop the controller. This combination effectively turns the setup into a compact portable gaming unit.

However, full realization of this potential remains future-oriented. Valve has emphasized that the Steam Controller integrates solely with the Steam platform and its Link application, prompting Mechanism to highlight the current lack of broad compatibility with iOS or Android systems. While it supports streaming games from a PC via the Steam Link app on a phone, broader gaming options are restricted. Upcoming software enhancements may expand functionality, though this limits immediate smartphone pairings. Such constraints do not impact Mechanism's complementary products, like the forthcoming Steam Controller Dock, which showcases the device when idle and includes the charging puck for continuous power.

Mechanism plans to offer the Basegrip for Steam Controller starting May 4 at a price of $9, with bundle discounts available alongside other items. Pricing for the Steam Controller Dock remains undisclosed, but it is slated for June delivery, and interested buyers can sign up for the waitlist immediately.
