U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is pursuing a specific Reddit user suspected of posting negative comments about the agency, and it's now compelling the platform to disclose the individual's details via a grand jury subpoena, as detailed in a story by The Intercept. The investigative publication accessed the legal document, which requires Reddit to hand over information about the accused user by April 14.

The publication indicates that ICE has spent about a month attempting to pinpoint this user's identity but has not succeeded. In particular, the subpoena demands the person's full name, home address, contact number, and additional private records. The Intercept noted that the order came from prosecutors in Washington, D.C., following an unsuccessful effort by ICE to obtain the data through a U.S. court in Northern California, the district overseeing San Francisco, Reddit's base of operations.

Legal representatives for Reddit argued that the user's contributions and right to remain anonymous are safeguarded by the First Amendment, labeling the agency's grand jury approach as 'a disturbing escalation,' per the report. The Intercept mentioned that Reddit has not indicated whether it plans to contest the directive, though the company issued a comment emphasizing that 'privacy is central to how Reddit operates and we take our commitment to protecting that seriously.' The statement further clarified that Reddit 'does not voluntarily share information with any government, especially not on users exercising their rights to criticize the government or plan a protest.'

Although this subpoena raises concerns about establishing a troubling pattern, it's hardly the initial instance of a U.S. agency seeking to unmask social media users who have expressed disapproval of ICE. A New York Times article revealed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued numerous subpoenas targeting platforms like Google, Discord, Meta, and Reddit once more, aiming to obtain personal information on their account holders.
