The integration of Apple CarPlay into Tesla electric vehicles remains on hold because of challenges related to iOS 26, as reported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. In his recent Power On newsletter, Gurman explained that Tesla's efforts to implement CarPlay are facing setbacks from software alignment problems and the limited number of users upgrading to iOS 26.
Tesla owners have endured a prolonged anticipation for CarPlay support, particularly after early speculation pointed to a possible launch toward the end of 2025 and reports emerged of Tesla conducting CarPlay trials in its cars last November. Gurman's update in the newsletter highlighted conflicts between Apple Maps and Tesla's proprietary navigation system, the latter of which integrates with the company's advanced driver-assistance capabilities.
In response to these problems, Apple issued a software update for iOS 26 aimed at improving harmony between the competing mapping tools, particularly during engagement of Tesla's hands-free driving modes. Despite this fix, Tesla appears hesitant to proceed with CarPlay deployment given the subdued uptake of iOS 26. Gurman pointed out that while adoption started lower than expected, it is now increasing, based on Apple's data showing that 74 percent of iPhones from the past four years are now on iOS 26.
No confirmed timeline exists for CarPlay's introduction in Tesla models, though adding this popular infotainment option might help revitalize the brand's market performance. Recent U.S. vehicle registration figures for January indicate that Tesla experienced a decline in deliveries for the fourth consecutive month.
