Snapchat+ users will soon have the ability to restore their Bitmoji avatars to a 2D format. The feature, known as Comic Bitmoji, can be enabled through a new setting in the upcoming days. According to Snap, this update restores the appeal of traditional avatars while retaining the advantages of the current 3D system. Enabling Comic Bitmoji will display all Bitmoji characters within Snapchat in two dimensions, and users can share corresponding stickers with contacts.

The company transitioned Bitmoji from 2D to 3D designs in 2023 to expand personalization options, such as additional body shapes, hair styles, and cosmetic features.

Despite the upgrade, a significant number of users expressed a desire to revert to the 2D aesthetic. Close to 100,000 individuals supported a petition on Change.org calling for the 2D Bitmoji's reinstatement, and Snap acknowledged the feedback by responding to it. The firm's CEO, Evan Spiegel, also endorsed the petition by signing it.

Snap explains that Comic Bitmoji functions by overlaying a 2D effect on existing 3D models. To ensure smooth animations and facial expressions in the flattened style, developers refined elements like sizing, lighting, and borders, as reported by Fast Company. With more than 320 million daily Bitmoji users, achieving accurate 2D visuals was a critical priority for the team.

The decision to restrict Comic Bitmoji to Snapchat+ paid tiers may limit accessibility, though it could incentivize additional sign-ups for the premium service.
