Shure's initial MV88 microphone served as a handy attachment for iPhone owners, but Apple's shift to USB-C rendered it incompatible with recent models. During CES 2026, Shure introduced an upgraded iteration featuring a USB-C connector, extending support to Android devices and various other gadgets. Notably, this enhanced MV88 is already on sale for $159.
Launched in 2015, the MV88 functions as a portable stereo condenser microphone that attaches directly to smartphones, tablets, or USB-C ports on laptops. It enhances audio recording beyond what standard device microphones provide, ideal for voiceovers and video footage. The device operates plug-and-play without complex configuration, and pairing it with Shure's applications unlocks features such as audio presets, gain adjustments, a five-band equalizer, limiter, compressor, high-pass filter, and an input level indicator.
The microphone includes an Auto Level Mode that dynamically modifies gain to prevent recordings from being overly loud or soft. A Real-Time Denoiser helps minimize ambient interference. The USB-C MV88 offers four configurable polar patterns: stereo, mono cardioid, mono bidirectional, and raw mid-side, with the ability to angle the unit upward or toward the user.
Early evaluations of the updated MV88 demonstrate a significant improvement in audio fidelity compared to integrated device microphones. It presents a practical option versus common clip-on lavalier mics, which require proximity to the sound source and struggle with environmental sounds or group recordings unless repositioned. The MV88 proves more suitable for documenting live performances, natural settings, or scenarios incorporating moderate ambient audio.
Initial audio assessments reveal strong performance, yielding recordings that are rich yet precise and distinct with minimal adjustments. The Real-Time Denoiser effectively removed the hum from a hotel air conditioning unit in one test, suggesting it could enhance vocal or video interviews conducted in less-than-ideal conditions. Further trials are anticipated at evening gatherings and the CES exhibition area.
A standout feature of the MV88 lies in its straightforward integration: it clips onto a USB-C-equipped device, and recording begins after brief app interactions. Shure supplies a compact carrying case to safeguard the microphone during travel or storage.
