Samsung intends to incorporate Perplexity into its forthcoming premium smartphones, extending Galaxy AI to encompass various AI assistants. The Perplexity assistant will connect with built-in tools like Samsung Notes, Clock, Gallery, Reminders, and Calendar, based on the recent disclosure. Select external applications will also gain compatibility, although Samsung has not revealed the exact ones. This development precedes the company's Galaxy Unpacked showcase by only a short time, promising additional insights into its alignment with the refreshed Bixby assistant in the near future.
Details so far reveal that the Perplexity assistant activates through the command 'Hey Plex,' separate from the media streaming platform Plex. Users can also trigger it using simple hardware shortcuts. Samsung leader Won-Joon Choi, serving as President, COO, and R&D head for the Mobile eXperience division, explained that broadening Galaxy AI focuses on enhancing user options and ease for completing daily activities. He noted, 'Galaxy AI functions as a coordinator, merging multiple AI types into a unified, intuitive, and fluid user journey.'
Samsung disclosed a collaboration with Perplexity the previous year, embedding the firm's AI-driven search feature into its television lineup. That said, Perplexity has encountered criticism for suspected content aggregation and intellectual property violations, culminating in a September legal action from dictionary maker Merriam-Webster and reference publisher Encyclopedia Britannica.
