A notorious cybercrime outfit known as ShinyHunters has asserted that it successfully penetrated Rockstar Games' cloud-based systems. The prominent video game studio has acknowledged the incident as a third-party data compromise. This group, previously implicated in intrusions against major players like Microsoft, Google, and Ticketmaster, shared an ultimatum on its online platform, giving Rockstar until payment or risk data exposure. The breach came to light initially through reports from Hackread and Cybersec Guru.

The perpetrators provided no specifics about the type of information they extracted from Rockstar, but warned that the deadline of April 14 loomed for any negotiation, after which they would publicize the stolen materials, potentially sparking multiple online issues. Responding to inquiries from Kotaku, Rockstar Games stated that only a small volume of non-critical internal details was compromised through the external breach, adding that the event carried no consequences for the business or its customer base.

Rockstar has faced cyber threats before, notably a 2022 attack that spilled extensive in-game footage and development materials for Grand Theft Auto VI. In the aftermath, an 18-year-old affiliate of the Lapsus$ hacking network, who played a role in that violation, was ordered into prolonged medical confinement by authorities.
