Although the shift toward electric vehicles in the US has faced recent setbacks, elements of the entertainment industry are contributing to sustainability efforts. Rivian has collaborated with the popular medical drama 'Grey's Anatomy' to create a specialized electric ambulance for use in the ongoing production.
This ambulance represents an adapted form of Rivian's Commercial Van, dubbed the 'vanbulance.' It fulfills two main roles: reducing harmful exhaust emissions on the filming location to protect actors and staff, while also supporting an environmentally themed narrative. According to Rivian's blog, the absence of engine sounds created a calmer atmosphere during active filming sessions.
The design incorporates features suited to television production. Panels on the walls and ceiling can be detached to enable cameras to capture necessary interior perspectives. Rivian substituted the typical rear cargo door with a pair of doors and included a lateral access point to the storage space. Additional elements consist of bespoke illumination and a branded exterior decal stating 'Seattle Emergency Response Services.'
To shape the internal configuration, the production team sought input from the Huntington Beach Fire Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department. Rivian noted in their post that this advice proved essential in grasping the practical ways emergency personnel operate their equipment.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the electric ambulance first appeared in the 'Grey's Anatomy' installment aired on November 13, 2025. It received greater emphasis in the episode that aired on Thursday, prompting Rivian to spotlight the project during this period.
