Steve Huffman, the company's CEO, revealed that the platform is investigating various techniques to ensure accounts belong to real people rather than automated programs. During an appearance on the TBPN podcast, Huffman discussed potential strategies for human confirmation, ranging from simple to more intrusive measures.
Huffman highlighted the least invasive option as biometric tools such as Face ID or Touch ID. He explained in the podcast that these systems demand physical human interaction, like touching a device or gazing at a screen, which effectively demonstrates the presence of an individual.
In addition to biometric passkeys, Huffman pointed to alternatives involving third-party providers that operate in a distributed manner or avoid personal identification requirements. At the opposite extreme, he noted heavier approaches, including services that scrutinize official identification documents.
Bots have increasingly overwhelmed social networks like Reddit in recent times, with some instances involving covert testing operations. While Reddit has not yet settled on a specific human verification approach, Huffman stressed the importance of preserving user privacy. Still, methods relying on personal or traceable information might alienate those who cherish the site's anonymous environment.
Huffman remarked that a core commitment to users involves not collecting names while confirming human users. He anticipated this would develop gradually for Reddit and other platforms alike, seeking an optimal balance.
Alexis Ohanian, Reddit's co-founder and previous executive chair, shared on X his surprise at the prospect of mandatory Face ID but acknowledged the need to counter bot-generated misinformation, though he questioned how to promote facial recognition among active posters and passive viewers. The publication contacted Reddit's press relations for comment and plans to revise the article upon receiving a response.
