The Comet AI browser from Perplexity has launched as a dedicated application for iPhone owners. It first appeared last summer for personal computers at a subscription rate of $200 per month. Both the iOS edition and the lately introduced Android version come at no charge.

As an AI-enhanced web browser, Comet falls into a rapidly growing market segment over the last year. It integrates browsing functions with a chat interface capable of handling certain user requests. Similar to other offerings in this space, it allows queries for webpage summaries or deeper investigations to provide further insights on topics.

According to Perplexity, Comet serves as a personal aide and collaborative thinker designed to convert inquisitiveness into action. The firm highlights its utility for online shopping and itinerary planning. However, users should exercise care with these features, as AI-driven browsers often prove vulnerable to digital fraud schemes.

The application effectively incorporates Apple's Liquid Glass design elements, resulting in a visually appealing interface with a prominent address bar. A MacStories review notes that the iOS implementation faces restrictions due to Apple's ecosystem controls. Third-party extensions remain unsupported, although users can designate it as their primary browser.

Privacy issues merit attention as well. Perplexity acknowledges employing browser activity to gather user information for advertising purposes, explaining the shift from a $200 monthly fee to a complimentary model.

Comet now supports iPhones, Android phones, Windows computers, and Macintosh systems. A dedicated iPad version is absent for now, though the core Perplexity application works on iPads, hinting at potential future expansion.
