OpenAI appears to be actively pursuing the creation of multiple AI-enhanced gadgets, such as intelligent eyewear, a voice-activated audio unit, and an illuminated fixture. Sources from The Information reveal that the firm has assembled a workforce exceeding 200 individuals focused solely on this initiative.

The initial offering slated for launch is said to be the voice-activated audio unit equipped with a built-in camera, designed to capture more comprehensive data on its owners and environment. An insider close to the effort notes that this capability includes spotting items placed on adjacent surfaces and overhearing discussions in the device's proximity. Additionally, the imaging system will incorporate a biometric verification function akin to Apple's facial unlock technology, facilitating secure transaction approvals.

This audio device is projected to cost anywhere from $200 to $300 and become available no sooner than the beginning of 2027. Further details suggest that OpenAI's AI-infused eyewear, in a field led by Meta, won't arrive before 2028. Regarding the illuminated fixture, although early models exist, its commercial viability remains uncertain.

In the previous year, OpenAI purchased the startup io Products, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, in a deal valued at $6.5 billion. Ive played a pivotal role in shaping Apple's visual identity, contributing to nearly all significant products from the 1990s until his exit in 2019. This purchase positions Ive to oversee the hardware innovation efforts at OpenAI moving forward.

Following the collaboration's inception, setbacks have arisen from engineering challenges, data protection worries, and supply chain hurdles related to the processing capabilities required for large-scale AI hardware production. Despite the formidable resources involved, the audio unit and subsequent items could encounter buyer hesitation over devices that continuously monitor audio and visual inputs.
