OpenAI has announced the end of its Sora video generation application. In a message shared on X on Tuesday afternoon, the firm stated it is parting ways with the tool. Details on the exact timeline for decommissioning the app and its associated API remain undisclosed, with further information expected soon.

An OpenAI representative explained to Engadget that the company plans to halt support for Sora in its consumer version and API offerings. The decision stems from evolving priorities amid rising computational needs, allowing the Sora development group to pivot toward simulations of real environments aimed at improving robotic systems for practical, hands-on applications.

Although the announcement may catch some off guard, indicators of Sora's potential phase-out emerged early in the year. The tool briefly dominated the US App Store rankings following its launch, but user engagement soon waned. According to Appfigures analytics reported at the beginning of 2026, the app experienced ongoing drops in monthly new downloads and revenue. Notably, during December—a peak period for app usage—Sora recorded a 32 percent drop in fresh installations compared to the previous month.

This move fits into OpenAI's broader strategic adjustments. Following the rollout of GPT-5.2 as a direct counter to Google's Gemini 3 Pro, the organization has emphasized tools tailored for experts such as programmers and data specialists, viewing business clients as essential for achieving financial sustainability. Yet, the closure carries repercussions for OpenAI. The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Disney is pulling out of an agreement inked late last year, thereby forgoing a planned $1 billion investment in the AI firm.
