ChatGPT enthusiasts face yet another setback, according to a report from Sources journalist Alex Heath. OpenAI has decided to postpone the introduction of its adult-oriented features for the chatbot once more. An official from the company explained to Heath that the rollout is being deferred to allow concentration on initiatives that benefit a broader user base at present.

In detail, the spokesperson highlighted priorities such as advancing AI capabilities, refining character traits, enhancing customization options, and creating a more initiative-taking interface. Despite this shift, OpenAI remains committed to launching the adult features eventually, though it will require additional development time.

The concept of adult mode for ChatGPT was first announced in October, when OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman shared on X the plan to implement stronger age verification measures under the motto of respecting adult users appropriately. This included provisions for adult-themed content like erotica accessible only to confirmed adults. Altman initially projected a December launch, but a company executive revised that timeline to the opening months of 2026 during a briefing that same month.

As the first quarter of 2026 draws near its end, OpenAI has not provided any updated schedule for the adult mode debut. That said, the firm started deploying its age estimation technology back in January, which could potentially support the forthcoming adult-oriented capabilities.
