Obsidian Entertainment has revealed it has no intentions of pursuing a third installment in The Outer Worlds series, as detailed in a Bloomberg article. CEO Fergus Urquhart refrained from specifying the motivations behind this decision, though he highlighted the underwhelming reception of The Outer Worlds 2 and emphasized the need to carefully evaluate resource allocation, budgets, and timelines for future projects.

Urquhart acknowledged that Avowed fell short of expectations for the studio, yet expressed ongoing dedication to its world. The team intends to continue producing content within the Avowed setting, though this may not involve a direct follow-up title. Notably, Avowed shares its universe with the Pillars of Eternity series.

The studio remains engaged in creating expansion content for The Outer Worlds 2, offering enthusiasts additional material to anticipate. Urquhart also disclosed plans for add-ons to Grounded 2, a project that achieved strong success. Last year, Obsidian launched three titles, a strategy that strained its support staff considerably.

“Distributing release dates more evenly allows better oversight of assets and prevents team exhaustion. Launching three titles within one year is unwise. This stemmed from various setbacks,” Urquhart explained.

Obsidian is additionally developing several undisclosed projects from scratch. Regarding Avowed, a PlayStation 5 version is slated for release on February 17. Every platform edition will receive a celebratory patch featuring New Game Plus options, additional playable species, fresh weaponry categories, and other enhancements. Avowed stands out as a quality title, making it a compelling choice for PS5 players, particularly fans of series like The Elder Scrolls.
