The independent studio Unbound Inc., founded by veteran game designer Shinji Mikami, has been purchased by Shift Up, the South Korean firm known for creating Stellar Blade and Goddess of Victory: Nikke. Shift Up, under the leadership of CEO Hyung-Tae Kim, will provide complete backing and global distribution for Unbound's upcoming projects, which remain under wraps.

Mikami has left an indelible mark on the survival horror genre through his direction of the original Resident Evil, its 2002 update, and Resident Evil 4. He also co-established PlatinumGames and launched Tango Gameworks, which produced titles like The Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush. Meanwhile, Shift Up's latest success, the action-packed Stellar Blade, was helmed by Kim himself.

Although Unbound unveiled itself via a quirky yet eerie promotional clip, specifics about its current projects are not yet public. The team aims to deliver experiences for PC and console players worldwide, drawing on themes featuring numerous monstrous elements in line with Mikami's established style.

Looking at potential overlaps, one might imagine fusions such as Resident Evil's theatrical scares paired with Stellar Blade's dramatic aesthetics, or Hi-Fi Rush's high-energy action enhanced by the vibrant anime influences of Goddess of Victory: Nikke. While these ideas are speculative, they highlight how the alliance between the two entities could yield compelling results in the industry.

In a statement shared on Shift Up's blog, Mikami expressed optimism about the arrangement: "We believe we can respect each other as creators and make games together. And I think with Hyung-Tae, we can even enjoy the hard parts.... Seeing my own vision and ideals come into focus like this, and finding someone whose direction aligns so closely is something I’ve rarely experienced before in my career. I hope we keep building together for a long time."

This move offers a secure foundation for Mikami's latest endeavor. His prior outfit, Tango Gameworks, joined Microsoft's portfolio in 2021, prompting Mikami's departure in 2023 following Hi-Fi Rush's launch. In 2024, amid widespread reductions in the gaming sector, Microsoft ceased operations at Tango, transferring its leftover staff to Krafton. Mikami has been steadily assembling Unbound since 2022.
