The company behind Facebook is executing significant workforce reductions once again, targeting a 10% decrease overall. This involves dismissing roughly 8,000 employees and scrapping around 6,000 vacant positions, as reported by Bloomberg.

In a company-wide message authored by Janelle Gale, who oversees human resources at Meta, these measures form a key component of ongoing initiatives to streamline operations and balance expenditures on emerging priorities. Such priorities probably encompass advancements in artificial intelligence, with Meta developing proprietary AI systems and utilizing internal teams for their development. Additionally, the firm's intelligent eyewear products are incorporating increasingly sophisticated AI features.

These recent job eliminations may not conclude Meta's ongoing downsizing phase. An analysis from March indicated intentions to shrink the workforce by as much as 20%, though without specifying when. Following that disclosure, Meta eliminated several hundred positions, mostly within its Reality Labs unit. Moreover, the organization began 2026 with reductions in metaverse activities, including the shutdown of three virtual reality development studios.
