According to Axios, Meta has reached multiple agreements with news organizations to supply up-to-date information for its AI chatbot features. These business arrangements enable the company's Meta AI tools to deliver more accurate responses to questions about recent developments and ongoing events.
The pacts span several years, with publishers receiving payment for their material, though exact financial terms remain undisclosed. Under the terms, Meta's AI systems are required to direct users to the source articles when addressing news-related inquiries, which could modestly increase visitor numbers for the outlets.
Among the collaborators are USA Today, People, Le Monde, and CNN, alongside a range of conservative-leaning sources announced today, including Fox News, The Daily Caller, and Washington Examiner. The inclusion of links to original content helps ensure access to primary sources for responses on sensitive or debated issues.
Meta describes this initiative as an initial phase, with plans to incorporate additional news providers to broaden coverage of various subjects ahead. The development marks a shift for the company, which has historically resisted compensating media firms for content access; it ceased payments to U.S. publishers in 2022 and discontinued the Facebook news section last year.
