Jason Blundell, who once served as creative director for the Call of Duty: Black Ops franchise at Activision Blizzard, has revealed the launch of his latest game development outfit, Magic Fractal Studios. The announcement came during an online broadcast alongside JC Farmer, a colleague from his prior venture at Dark Outlaw Games, just over one week following Sony's decision to shutter that earlier studio.
Details on Magic Fractal remain scarce, limited primarily to its branding and online profiles. The now-defunct Dark Outlaw Games operated under similar secrecy and was dissolved without ever disclosing a debut title. In the wake of its closure, Blundell clarified that the team had not been developing a live-service title—a point worth highlighting given the association between such games and recent high-profile shutdowns. For instance, Sony terminated Firewalk Studios in October 2024 shortly after the debut of its live-service shooter Concord, and it dismantled Bluepoint Games in February 2026 following the apparent cancellation of a live-service project tied to the God of War franchise.
This marks Blundell's third independent studio since departing Activision Blizzard in 2020. His second effort, Dark Outlaw Games, emerged in March 2025 with financial support from Sony. Prior to that, he headed Deviation Games, which Sony closed in 2024 amid reports that it too was crafting an exclusive for the PlayStation platform.
