Following its groundbreaking lunar orbit, NASA's Artemis II mission prepares to conclude with a return to our planet today. The Orion capsule, transporting astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen, is expected to achieve a water landing near San Diego around 8:07 p.m. ET. Viewers can follow the event live via YouTube and the NASA+ platform, with additional coverage available on Netflix and HBO Max. The main broadcast kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Having launched aboard the powerful SLS rocket and completed a nine-day orbital journey, the Artemis II team now faces the riskiest phase of the operation. The re-entry process for Orion should last about 13 minutes, during which the vehicle will endure extreme conditions reaching 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2,760 degrees Celsius.
Returning safely remains a high-stakes challenge for crewed missions, and this one carries extra scrutiny due to the 'skip reentry' tested in the uncrewed Artemis 1 flight. That maneuver involved the capsule using its aerodynamics to briefly exit the upper atmosphere before final descent, leading to unexpected heat damage and charring. After an extensive review spanning several months, NASA confirmed the vehicle's airworthiness, yet the current mission will employ a steadier trajectory to limit thermal stress.
This marks the first instance in over five decades that NASA must navigate astronauts home from a lunar voyage. In total, the Artemis II participants will have covered 695,081 miles, or 1,118,624 kilometers, while documenting remarkable visuals and highlighting the achievements of multinational partnerships.
