Although Fender Audio revealed its latest headphones and speakers just prior to CES, the event in Las Vegas provided the initial chance to examine the collection up close. This brand, owned by Fender and operated through Riffsound, develops and produces fresh audio products under a licensed name. It's been some time since the renowned guitar and amp maker ventured into everyday speakers, and this setup echoes the past collaboration between Zound and Marshall.
Setting aside the background details, the Mix headphones feature a customizable design where most components can be swapped out. The earpieces separate from the band, and the cushions around the ears can be exchanged. Additionally, the battery is user-replaceable via a convenient compartment located under one cushion. On the opposite side, a USB-C adapter for cable-free high-fidelity sound is securely stored, with the option for direct wired high-fidelity playback through USB-C.
The Mix controls remain straightforward, relying on one joystick to adjust volume, manage playback, and handle power along with device pairing. A separate button switches between different active noise cancellation settings. For audio performance, the headphones deliver strong low-end response and prominent vocal presence. During the short trial, the mid frequencies felt somewhat subdued, though a thorough evaluation awaits a dedicated unit. Notably, endurance stands out, with up to 52 hours of playback when noise cancellation is active and as much as 100 hours when deactivated.
Turning to the Elie series of speakers, each model shares core capabilities, such as dual wireless connections for microphones— with an in-house version in development— and a versatile input supporting both XLR and 1/4-inch connections for musical instruments. The compact Elie 06 includes a high-frequency driver, a midrange speaker, and a bass unit, delivering 60 watts total power. The bigger Elie 12 expands on this by doubling the components, providing greater power in a design that's still easy to transport.
The Elie speakers function independently, in stereo setups, or linked in a Multi configuration supporting up to 100 units. Fender Audio effectively incorporates standard wireless speaker essentials while adding distinctive connectivity options. This blend merges everyday portable audio devices with larger social gathering systems, appealing to those seeking capability without oversized builds or visual effects.
Ultimately, technical details only go so far without solid audio reproduction. A comprehensive verdict will come after extended testing with review samples, but the initial encounter proved promising for both Elie models. The tuning emphasizes substantial low frequencies across the board, with the Elie 12 delivering noticeably more impact. They also excel in rendering voices distinctly and capturing fine elements in higher registers, demonstrated through tracks rich in nuances such as Béla Fleck's banjo performances.
Fender Audio indicates that the full range of products will launch soon. The headphones and the Elie 06 carry a price tag of $299 each, while the Elie 12 is set at $399.
