Renowned singer Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung, alleging the company employed her image in television marketing without approval or payment. According to an initial report from Variety, the legal filing accuses Samsung of violating copyright and trademark laws, as well as engaging in improper commercial use of her likeness.
The issue arose when Samsung featured a photo of Lipa's face on the protective boxes for its televisions during the previous year. The British artist discovered the matter in approximately June 2025 and made multiple requests for Samsung to cease the practice. The court documents describe Samsung's reply as indifferent and insensitive, noting that the affected items continue to be available for purchase. Lipa's legal team argues that Samsung benefited financially from the image, creating a false sense of product endorsement by the star, who provided none. The suit also references social media comments on X indicating that some buyers were influenced to purchase the televisions upon noticing Lipa's picture on the packaging.
The legal action states that Samsung's actions undermine the efforts Lipa has invested in building her personal brand and limit her capacity to manage and profit from her intellectual property. Beyond the purported unjust profits, the complaint asserts that Lipa holds the rights to the specific image, which was captured behind the scenes at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival. This is not the initial occasion Samsung's televisions have faced litigation, as the firm was among five targeted in a December suit by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for incorporating advertising surveillance software into their devices. Efforts to obtain a statement from Samsung regarding the Lipa case have been made, with plans to revise this report upon receiving a response.
