Mystery Heroes stands out as a popular casual mode in Overwatch, where participants receive randomly assigned characters and automatically change to different ones upon respawning. Many enthusiasts favor it for unwinding or preparing for competitive matches, as it demands familiarity with the game's 51 heroes to effectively team up and anticipate enemy lineups. However, the latest season launch introduced modifications to this mode by Blizzard, which have reportedly reduced its enjoyment for numerous players.
According to the developers, these adjustments aim to preserve the mode's relaxed tempo while addressing longstanding frustrations. A key alteration involves the handling of perks, which in standard modes accumulate as upgrades or new capabilities during gameplay. Previously, Mystery Heroes players started rounds with arbitrarily selected perks, contributing to the mode's unpredictable charm. Now, perks have been entirely eliminated from Mystery Heroes.
This removal streamlines gameplay by allowing quicker adaptation without pausing to review equipped perks amid fast-paced respawns. Perks were introduced to Overwatch about a year ago, enhancing overall engagement, though their absence in Mystery Heroes now creates a disparity with other modes, particularly since certain heroes rely heavily on these features for optimal performance.
Another significant shift converts Mystery Heroes from 5v5 to 6v6 team sizes, a format used elsewhere in the game but problematic here. Standard 6v6 setups often feature balanced roles like two tanks, two supports, and two damage dealers. In Mystery Heroes, however, random assignments can lead to lopsided defenses, such as four tanks and two supports, constrained to no more than three heroes per class after respawns. Although tanks receive reduced health pools in 6v6, such configurations remain formidable. Offense teams lack the flexibility to select counters, potentially stalling at chokepoints if lacking suitable heroes to target supports. Defending as an isolated support amid five teammates also proves challenging.
Player dissatisfaction extends beyond the author, with every post-update Mystery Heroes session featuring complaints about the perk elimination, while reactions to the 6v6 change vary. Discussions on Reddit and Overwatch forums reflect similar discontent and calls for reversal.
Blizzard has demonstrated a commitment to evolution, implementing substantial enhancements over recent years, including the 2025 introduction of Stadium mode and a well-received soft relaunch. The current season brings beneficial adjustments like varied hero reworks, the reinstatement of post-match accolades, and the addition of the impressive new damage hero Sierra. Nevertheless, the tweaks to Mystery Heroes appear misguided, prompting hopes that Blizzard will soon reconsider and restore its former appeal.
