Similar to the process for selecting iPhone components, Apple's website now enables buyers to pick individual specifications for a new Mac during purchase. MacWorld was the first to notice this change, as Apple has refreshed its web-based tool for configuring and buying Macs. Unlike the earlier version, which limited choices to a handful of ready-made setups, the revised interface allows sequential selection of features one by one.

While the shift isn't revolutionary from opting for preset packages, it offers greater personalization for shoppers, who can now decide on elements such as exterior finish, screen type, processor, RAM amount, drive capacity, and charger type. Additionally, the revamped interface includes the ability to include certain software right from the start, including titles like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro on the purchased device.

This enhancement in the setup process could signal preparations for the upcoming refresh of MacBook Pro models. MacWorld points to speculation that Apple plans to introduce M5 Pro and M5 Max processors with increased options for specifying the number of central and graphics processing cores. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has indicated that the next-generation MacBook Pro might launch in tandem with macOS 26.3, anticipated sometime from February to March.
