Apple has verified to Engadget the discontinuation of the Mac Pro, a tower-style desktop last refreshed in 2023. According to 9to5Mac, the device is absent from Apple's Mac product listings and online store. Consequently, the Mac Studio currently serves as Apple's premier option for professional users.

The latest iteration of the Mac Pro debuted in 2019, featuring a perforated modular exterior, Intel processors, and numerous user-friendly expansion options. It was launched to compensate for prior shortcomings in satisfying the demanding requirements of expert Mac customers. However, its reign as the flagship lasted briefly; by 2020, Apple shifted toward its proprietary M-series processors based on Arm architecture, demonstrating superior performance and energy efficiency without relying on Intel.

Apple later equipped the Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip while retaining its original aesthetics, signaling the product's impending obsolescence. The more compact Mac Studio, unveiled in 2022 and also compatible with the M2 Ultra, has received subsequent enhancements, leaving the larger model behind. Bloomberg indicated that Apple intended to phase out the Mac Pro by November 2025, making the early termination just a short time ahead of schedule unsurprising.

Apple's commitment to high-end users, artists, and those seeking premium computing power persists via the Mac Studio and the newly introduced Studio Display XDR, which succeeds the Pro Display XDR originally paired with the 2019 Mac Pro. To solidify its professional appeal, Apple could integrate an M5 Max processor into the Mac Studio.

Update, March 26, 6:25PM ET: Incorporated Apple's official statement confirming the Mac Pro's discontinuation.
