Nintendo surprised fans with an impromptu Star Fox Direct presentation on May 6, announcing a refreshed version of the beloved N64 title, Star Fox, set for an exclusive launch on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game arrives on June 25, incorporating fresh gameplay options and multiplayer features over the internet.

The updated Star Fox boasts enhanced graphics and revamped character designs, evoking a whimsical, film-like quality reminiscent of a certain fox fable. According to Nintendo's announcement, it's positioned as a movie-inspired experience, highlighted by newly created cinematic sequences featuring complete voiceovers and innovative intermission debriefs. Players can tackle the main storyline across beginner, standard, and advanced difficulty levels, where the hardest tier requires exceptional performance to access. Additional content includes a test mode with unique tasks and an innovative combat system. This combat setup involves eight-player aerial skirmishes across three distinct arenas: a territory-capture match set on Corneria, a gem-gathering contest on Fichina, and a retrieval mission battling cosmic buccaneers in Sector Y. Participants can form squads for closed sessions or enter public lobbies, with the title enabling shared play both in-person and remotely.

The structure and progression of the levels remain faithful to the original, as does the characteristic dialogue exchanged by Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy, and their teammates. Cooperative play is available locally throughout the entire story, allowing one user to handle flight controls while another manages weaponry. The experience works with the upgraded N64 gamepad and the second-generation Joy-Con's pointing mechanics. Tailored for Switch 2 users, the game lets individuals select from the core team as customizable icons during voice chats.

During the broadcast, Nintendo showcased gameplay footage displaying the Arwing in dynamic maneuvers like soaring, decelerating, accelerating, and executing signature spins, alongside the Blue-Marine underwater vehicle combating cephalopods. The session concluded by previewing the opening sequence, which highlighted various acrobatic animal pilots, such as James McCloud, Fox's father, and Pigma.
