Reports from online communities and a Kotaku article indicate that the newest Nintendo Switch 2 firmware has rendered numerous unofficial docking stations and connected peripherals unusable. It's unclear whether Nintendo deliberately caused this or if it resulted from an oversight. Engadget has contacted the manufacturer seeking details on the matter.

Version 21.0.0 of the Switch 2 firmware introduces several user-friendly enhancements, including an option to disable automatic video playback within the eShop and symbols that distinguish between digital downloads and physical game copies. Unfortunately, this release has also triggered problems with docking hardware.

Users of the Switch 2 have noted that affected docks fail to function properly or behave erratically, frequently necessitating a system reboot to attempt operation. While not every unofficial dock experiences these troubles, reports span a variety of models. Content creator AustinJohnPlays examined two Switch 2-compatible dock adapters post-update and found both to be defective.

In addressing the concerns, Nintendo described the situation as an unintended consequence limited to specific hardware. The firm stated it has no plans to disrupt or nullify support for authorized third-party docking options. Such compatibility disruptions occasionally arise with console software revisions, as seen previously with the initial Switch model.

Manufacturers of these peripherals must now issue their own firmware corrections to restore functionality. Until then, prospective buyers should proceed carefully with unofficial docking products.
